  • So are we actively discouraging students to take part-time bar work now?! Not sure I am comfortable with that Elizabeth!

After speaking with graduate recruiters for the past three years I’d say the vast majority would highly recommend getting any form of work experience, and the core skills (such as interpersonal skills) learnt from working behind a bar can be used and translated into the work place.

What have you got for me?

  • Oliver, when would I ever discourage part-time bar work?!

I would never shy aware from encouraging bar work as I think it’s a great way of gaining those all important skills for work and life…

Who agrees with me? What other jobs can you think of to earn some extra dollar at uni? Ideas below please :)

  • I think the key is to make the most of whatever work you do. So if you are interested in marketing and you are working in a bar, talk to the manager about new promotion initiatives, set up a facebook page, re-design their website etc. It might mean a bit more work for no extra cash, but it will give you relevent experience to talk about at future interviews. Recruiters are looking for skills and experience, but they are also looking for particular qualities and initiative is usually high on the list!
