Engineering covers a wide range of industries and businesses and plays a key role in all types of working environments. Whilst many engineers do still work in the traditional engineering sectors such as manufacturing, building, transport etc, today, you are just as likely to find engineers working in offices, studios and outdoors.
With the rapid development of technology, engineering often plays a key role in these advancements. There are approximately 600,000 professional engineers in the UK working in areas such as:
- Aerospace Engineering – The design of aircraft, spacecraft and related topics
- Chemical Engineering – The conversion of raw materials into usable commodities.
- Civil Engineering – The design and construction of public and private works, such as infrastructure, bridges and buildings.
- Electrical Engineering – The design of electrical systems, such as transformers, as well as electronic goods.
- Computer Engineering – The design of Softwares and Hardware-software integration.
- Mechanical Engineering – The design of physical or mechanical systems, such as engines, power trains, kinematic chains and vibration isolation equipment.
A work placement or internship in an engineering role can provide you with an excellent insight into life as an engineer. Due to the nature of engineering, the opportunities are endless.
