The future of IT…?

Monday, 12th January 2009

Living in The Matrix! Here’s an interesting article that I’ve found from Inside Careers entitled ‘Where is IT heading?’ by Helen Boddy.

The article discusses the growing cross functionality of PCs, laptops, mobile phones, iPods etc. and the fact that this is pointing to the emergence of an all-in-one “photo-IT-comms system that combines the functions of multimedia devices, telephony and computing.”

The article then goes on to talk about new ways of creating and displaying information, as seen on Apple’s iPhone, the ever-increasing demand for data storage, and finally the impact on the future of IT careers. Will the UK continue to outsource to cheaper, foreign shores; or will the increasing reliance on IT throughout all business simply improve the job prospects with IT?

The speed at which IT has developed over the past decade has been frightening, so who knows what we will have in 2019! One thing is for sure, IT skills will become more and more essential, so ensuring your own IT skills are up to scratch is a good start. The chances are you’ll have your own PC or laptop whilst on placement or internship, so it’s a great opportunitiy to polish your current skills and learn plenty of new ones!

As always, comments are welcome…
