So you’re thinking of a career in IT then…

Information Technology is such a broad term when relating to careers. There can be no denying that IT is now integral to pretty much all businesses, and therefore there is considerable demand for students and graduates with IT skills in virtually every industry.
Long gone are the days when anyone working in IT looked like this bloke and sat in front of a computer this big! There are numerous areas of employment within IT, including more technical roles such as web design, technology development, quality management and training, software analysis and testing, database design and so on. For the less technical amongst you, there are career opportunities in consultancy, sales, customer support and general IT management.
The large IT companies such as IBM and HP take on many students in work placement and internship roles every year (IBM employed over 400 placement students during 2007/08!) so there are many opportunities in the larger organisations. However, you shouldn’t discount smaller companies when it comes to IT. Using your skills and knowledge, you may be able to go into a small company and make a real impact, bringing fresh ideas and developments to what may be dated systems.
Doing an IT related work placement or internship can provide you with an excellent start in your career, even if you decide that IT is not for you once you graduate. The chances are, you’ll need IT skills in most graduate careers and employers are increasingly looking for IT-savvy recruits to bring new ideas and skills to the company.
